The business manager for Florence Griffith Joyner asked how East Germany could know whether the thigh muscles of the triple Olympic gold medalist had expanded by two inches in one year, as suggested in the West German magazine, Stern.

“Since when have the East Germans ever been close enough to Florence to measure her thighs?” Gordon Baskin asked. A story this week in Stern said an East German report alleges there is evidence Griffith Joyner used performance-enhancing substances.

“From the photos Al (Joyner, Griffith Joyner’s husband) has, you can’t tell the difference in Florence’s makeup from 1984 to 1988, except for her hairdo, which is different. Her legs and body are virtually the same.”
