Big Ten Roundup : Ohio State Holds Off Boston College

Scottie Graham rushed for 151 yards, including 70 on a touchdown run, and Ohio State’s defense made a late stand in a 34-29 victory over Boston College at Columbus, Ohio.

Boston College (0-4) got the ball at the Ohio State 24-yard line when David Thompson blocked Jeff Bohlman’s punt with 3:01 to play.

The Eagles drove to the four-yard line, but defensive tackle Mike Showalter and linebacker Derek Isaman stopped fullback Ed Toner for a one-yard loss on a run up the middle with 50 seconds left.

Ohio State (2-1) rolled up 410 yards total offense in the first half and led, 31-7.

Willie Hicks, a reserve quarterback, replaced Mark Kamphaus at the start of the second half and led a Boston College comeback. He hit his first five passes for 84 yards to set up the Eagles’ first two touchdowns of the second half.

Carlos Snow had 143 yards in 23 carries for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State’s Frey completed 15 of 26 passes for 252 yards, but he was just 5 of 11 for 61 yards in the second half.

Kamphaus was 10 for 20 passing for 167 yards, one touchdown and one interception in his half of work.

Michigan 41, Maryland 21--Elvis Grbac completed his first five passes, two of them for touchdowns, to lead the sixth-ranked Wolverines at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Grbac finished with 10 completions in 20 attempts for 187 yards for Michigan (2-1). Neal O’Donnell, playing despite a bruised right hand, completed 15 of 26 for 197 yards and one touchdown for Maryland (1-4).

Grbac, a redshirt freshman, hit Chris Calloway with a 23-yard touchdown pass on Michigan’s first possession and threw an 11-yarder to Greg McMurtry on the Wolverines’ second possession.

Tony Boles had touchdown runs of one and 64 yards in the second quarter, helping the Wolverines to a 28-7 halftime lead.

Iowa 30, Tulsa 22--Running back Tony Stewart, who regained his starting job this week, scored the Hawkeyes’ last two touchdowns in a win at Iowa City, Iowa.

Last season Stewart became the first sophomore in Iowa history to rush for more than 1,000 yards but injured his left knee late in the season. He had played a reserve role in the Hawkeyes’ first two games, but his 99-yard rushing performance in a victory against Iowa State last week earned him a starting role against Tulsa.

Indiana 32, Toledo 12--Mike Dumas blocked two consecutive punts for scores and Anthony Thompson rushed for his 50th career touchdown for the Hoosiers at Bloomington, Ind.

Dumas, a junior cornerback, blocked punts in the game’s opening four minutes.

His first block was on Toledo’s opening drive. He recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown. He had another blocked punt that resulted in a safety.

Thompson, a senior who is the Hoosiers’ career rushing and scoring leader, rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns.

The Hoosiers improved to 2-1, and Toledo dropped to 2-2.

Minnesota 34, Indiana St. 14--Darrell Thompson ran for a career-high 231 yards, scored three touchdowns and set two school records to lead the Golden Gophers at Minneapolis.

Minnesota (2-1) held a 17-14 halftime lead before taking control of the Sycamores (2-3).

Thompson, the Gophers’ all-time leading rusher with 3,761 yards, had touchdown runs of 19, 27 and eight yards, setting school records for touchdowns with 38 and rushing touchdowns with 35. Both records were held by Marion Barber, who had 35 touchdowns, including 33 rushing, while playing for Minnesota from 1977-80.
