Southland Roundup : CS Northridge Rallies Past Cal Poly SLO

Sherdrick Bonner threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Billy Nealy with four minutes left to lead Cal State Northridge to a 13-10 win over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Saturday night at San Luis Obispo.

The touchdown pass capped a 14-play, 65-yard drive that included two fourth-down conversions.

Cal Poly SLO drove to the Northridge 20-yard line with 45 seconds left, but freshman Tom McCook missied a 35-yard field-goal attempt on a fourth-and-one situation.

Northridge is 3-2. Cal Poly SLO is 2-2.

University of San Diego 23, Redlands 17--Dave Bergmann kicked three field goals in the first half and running back Todd Jackson scored in the second half to help the Toreros win a nonconference game at Redlands.

Bergmann kicked field goals of 30, 33 and 34 yards as San Diego led at halftime, 16-3.

San Diego (4-0) increased its lead to 23-3 in the third quarter when Jackson scored on a 15-yard run. He gained 86 yards in 24 carries.

Redlands (1-3) cut the lead to 23-10 later in the third quarter when quarterback Brian Harmon scored on a one-yard run. Harmon also completed 17 of 35 passes for 186 yards.

San Diego quarterback Brendan Murphy completed eight of 14 passes for 124 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown pass to Ken Jones in the second quarter.

UC Santa Barbara 24, Cal Lutheran 21--Todd Reynolds kicked a 50-yard field goal and Steve Armstrong threw three touchdown passes to lift the Gauchos at Santa Barbara.

Reynolds’ kick broke a 21-21 tie with 5:13 left.

The Gauchos’ Charlie Brown sacked Cal Lutheran’s Tim Zeddies as time expired, ending the Kingsmen’s comeback.

UC Santa Barbara (2-2) led, 21-14, at halftime behind Armstrong’s touchdown passes of four and one yards to Kahled Shahbo. Armstrong completed 16 of 29 passes for 184 yards.

Cal Lutheran (1-3) had tied the score when Cassidy O’Sullivan returned the second-half kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown.

Occidental 24, LaVerne 12--Gary Little rushed for 119 yards in 28 carries and gave the Tigers the lead for good in the second quarter of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Eagle Rock.

Little’s 13-yard touchdown run gave the Tigers a 14-6 lead. They led, 17-6, at halftime.

Occidental held LaVerne to 17 yards rushing and intercepted quarterback Mark Brown three times.
