Marvin Carpenter, operator of one of California’s largest goldfish farms, was convicted of a “war against nature” in killing thousands of protected birds over a five-year period. Carpenter’s wife, Carole, was acquitted of one count of falsifying a federal report but Marvin Carpenter and their family-owned corporation were both found guilty of 32 of 36 felony counts. Prosecutor Don Searles said Marvin Carpenter was motivated by greed in killing as many as 9,200 protected birds including herons, egrets, hawks and avocets.
