Bush OKs Funds for Hansen Dam Recreation Plan

Share

Federal legislation appropriating $780,000 to restore a lake and recreational facilities at Hansen Dam in the northeast San Fernando Valley has been signed by President Bush, and a state bill awarding another $475,000 for the project won Gov. George Deukmejian’s approval Monday.

The federal and state money are to fund the first step in the creation of at least one lake for swimming, fishing and boating, as well as picnic areas, playgrounds and, possibly, hiking and horse trails. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which owns the 1,540-acre area, is preparing a master plan for development of the Hansen Dam Flood Control Basin.

The federal money was contained in the Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act, which Bush signed Friday.

The $780,000 for Hansen Dam accrued in a three-year-old federal trust fund generated by fees paid by contractor Bill Blomgren. Blomgren, who digs silt from flood control channels for sale to construction firms, pays 15 to 25 cents for each ton removed.
