Red Cross Seeks Aid for Hurricane Victims

American Red Cross officials are in Los Angeles this week to urge residents to donate money for the Hurricane Hugo relief effort.

“The human need goes on,” Patricia Snyder, national chairwoman of disaster services for the Red Cross, told reporters.

Though the hurricane did not directly affect West Coast residents, officials noted that two years ago massive aid was given to victims of the Whittier earthquake.

The Red Cross hopes to raise $2 million in the Los Angeles area.

The Red Cross also is providing assistance to thousands of families in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, said Gene Dyson, a member of the Red Cross Board of Governors.
