Statwatch : Nonleague Outcomes Less Than Golden

Share

One season after three of its teams reached the semifinal round of the Southern Section Division II playoffs, the Golden League is taking its lumps. After four weeks, none of the league’s six teams are above .500 and the league has a a collective record of 6-17-1.

Division champion Antelope Valley is 1-3 and has been routed by West Bakersfield (37-15), Redlands (35-13) and Loyola (36-0). Canyon is 1-2-1.

A down year for the league? Not according to coaches.

“It’s nice to be 5-0, but it’s not how many games you win in September that counts,” Antelope Valley Coach Brent Newcomb said.

Offense: Hart kicker Brady Vilensky set a school record with eight extra points in the Indians’ 56-14 victory over Saugus. Jim Harper set the previous mark with seven in 1986. Vilensky is 12 of 12 on extra-point attempts. . . . Reserve running back Scott Blanchard’s 92-yard touchdown run against Saugus also was a Hart record, eclipsing a 20-year-old mark. Hart fell six points short of equaling the school record for points in a game.

After three games, Kennedy tailback Ontiwaun Carter has rushed for 572 yards, more than any Northwest Valley Conference team other than Granada Hills. . . . The Montclair Prep offense is ranked No. 1 in the Valley despite just 48 passing yards. The Mounties have amassed 1,353 rushing yards, though, averaging 350 yards a game.

After two games, Jerome Casey of Sylmar and Danny Larson of Birmingham have emerged as the most potent offensive weapons in the Valley Pac-8 Conference. Casey has rushed for 285 yards and five touchdowns in 31 carries and caught five passes for 168 yards and three touchdowns. He is accounting for more than 226 yards per game. Larson has passed for 283 yards, rushed for 111 and is averaging 192 yards a game.

After rushing for 280 yards in 31 carries in a win over Verdugo Hills, Poly’s Jonathan Campbell has amassed 479 rushing yards and five touchdowns in three games.

After last year’s nearly unstoppable rushing attack behind Curtis Scott, the Monroe offense is averaging an anemic 49 yards a game in two losses.

Defense: Burroughs has allowed only 246 yards passing in four games (61.5 average). The Indians surrendered only 82 yards last week against Glendale and eight against La Canada the week before. Cornerback Keith Reiter made 10 tackles against Glendale. . . . Burbank defensive tackle Maurice Randin has recorded six sacks.
