Even though they were not regular partners last season, the UC Irvine doubles team of Trevor Kronemann and Shige Kanroji are ranked No. 1 in the preseason Volvo Tennis/Collegiate Rankings.
Kronemann, a three-time all-American, and Mike Briggs, who has turned pro, were runners-up for the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. doubles championship last year. Kronemann and Kanroji were 8-2 as a team last year.
Kronemann, who was 34-16 in singles last year, is fourth in the preseason singles rankings.
The Anteaters, who were 25-7 last season and finished fourth in the final poll, are ranked ninth.
Defending champion Stanford is No. 1, Georgia is No. 2, UCLA No. 3, Louisiana State No. 4 and South Carolina No. 5.
