San Juan Capistrano : Plan OK’d to Convert Proposed Health Center

Share

The City Council approved a plan Tuesday allowing a developer to convert a proposed health center into office buildings in exchange for a $100,000 cash deposit earmarked for future public recreation facilities.

Existing city permits for the project, dubbed Healthpark by developer Capistrano Business Plaza Associates, required construction of an emergency surgery and health rehabilitation center with private amenities, including a swimming pool and tennis courts.

To convert its proposed buildings to commercial offices, the developer was asked to contribute $100,000 for public recreational use rather than build the private facilities.

City officials have said the money may be used to build two new tennis courts, because pending plans for a new civic center will eliminate four public tennis courts in the center of town.

The developer also agreed to reduce the project, on Rancho Viejo Road near Interstate 5, from 40,000 square feet to 25,000 square feet.
