Prep Roundup : Arroyo’s 7 Goals Lead Villa Park to Water Polo Win

Gavin Arroyo scored seven goals to lead Villa Park High School to an 11-8 victory over host Canyon in a Century League water polo match Wednesday.

Villa Park improved to 14-3 overall and 1-0 in league play.

In Empire League water polo:

Esperanza 19, Loara 4--Mark Campagna had four goals to lead host Esperanza (11-1, 1-0). Brian Pickler and Josh Hetland had three goals each for Esperanza.

In Pacific Coast League water polo:

Orange 15, Laguna Beach 3--Joel Stewart had eight goals and goalie David McGhee had 12 saves as the Panthers (8-7, 1-0) won at home.

Woodbridge 8, Laguna Hills 4--Goalie Omid Dilmathian had eight saves in a losing cause for Laguna Hills (2-6, 0-1).

In Sea View League water polo:

Corona del Mar 14, Estancia 3--The Sea Kings, ranked No. 1 in the county and Southern Section 4-A, easily won their league opener. Gunnar Gustafson had six goals, and Brandon Howald and Pod Cullen two each for Corona del Mar (9-0, 1-0).

Tustin 15, Saddleback 2--Jeremy Yorba , Josh Routon and Jim Smith each had three goals to lead Tustin (7-4, 1-0) at Saddleback. Mike Gonzales had nine saves for Tustin.

In Sunset League water polo:

Marina 17, Westminster 4--Jason Cox scored six times in the first half to lead Marina (10-2, 1-0) at Golden West College. Marina led, 12-0, at halftime and played mostly reserves in the second half.

In nonleague water polo:

Kennedy 21, Lakewood 3--Shawn Miyasaki and Jason Pasol each scored three times to lead host Kennedy (6-0). Goalie Jeff Williams had 10 saves for the Fighting Irish.

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

Rosary 14, Westminster 4--Visiting Rosary (9-1) was led by Mandy Gomez, who swept her sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0.

Western 15, Pacifica 3--Tammi Galeai swept her sets, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0, to lead visiting Western (8-1).

In Olympic League boys’ cross-country:

Eric Strand finished first and Travis Haynes second to lead Orange Lutheran (5-2, 3-1) to victories over Valley Christian, 21-35, and Miraleste, 21-34, in a triangular meet at Irvine Regional Park. Strand ran the three-mile race in 17 minutes 3 seconds and Haynes in 17:09.
