Scatback Leads Los Amigos Past Garden Grove

Eddie Benson isn’t a tailback of great size. In fact, at 5-7 and 160 pounds, he’s kind of small.

But Benson played a big part in Los Amigos High’s 13-0 victory over Garden Grove Friday night in front of 2,500.

Benson, a sophomore, stepped into the starting lineup at the beginning of the season after five starters transferred to other schools. Benson remained, and hasn’t let his diminutive stature or inexperience dictate how he performs on the playing field.

Friday he rushed for 90 yards in 19 carries, played part of the game with a sprained right ankle and sat out all but one play in the fourth quarter.

“He has to carry our load,” said Los Amigos Coach Art Michalik. “He’s the only speed we have.”

Defenses have had trouble stopping him all season, and Garden Grove’s was no exception.

Benson scored twice in the first half on runs of three and 15 yards, to give Los Amigos a 13-0 advantage. Garden Grove falls to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the league.

“We just got outquicked and outmanned up front,” said Garden Grove Coach Jeff Buenafe.
