Harbor Proves the Cure for What Ails Valley, 22-0

For Valley College, the Harbor football team has the same effect as a tablespoon of cod-liver oil.

A healthy dose of the Seahawks and Valley is feeling better in no time. Valley has met Harbor seven times since 1983 and has won six of the meetings.

The Seahawks proved to be the right elixir again Saturday night as Valley won its first game of 1989, defeating Harbor, 22-0, in a Western State Conference game at Valley.

“The kids played good tonight, but this is one game. Big deal,” Valley Coach Chuck Ferrero said. “There are a lot of games to go.”

Valley was led by sophomore tailback Allen Moore, who rushed for a career-high 170 yards in 30 carries.

Valley had rushed for a combined 147 yards in three games before Saturday.

The Monarchs hardly missed quarterback Trendell Williams, who was sidelined because of an injured thumb. Freshman Mark Mengoni simply handed off to Moore and other Valley ballcarriers most of the night as he attempted only six passes, completing five for 31 yards.

Valley (1-3, 1-2 in conference play) rushed for 226 yards and had 257 yards total--68 more than it had been averaging--in handing Harbor (1-3, 0-3) its third consecutive defeat.

The continued absence of kicker Jim Harper (pulled quadriceps muscle), whose 59-yard field goal earlier this season set a school record, hurt the Monarchs. Four times Valley turned the ball over on downs inside Harbor territory rather than attempt a fourth-down field goal.

Valley led, 15-0, at halftime and put the game away early in the fourth quarter on Donald Dozier’s three-yard touchdown run. Dozier, who had a 27-yard touchdown run called back on a motion penalty, finished with 47 yards in 10 carries.

Valley held Harbor to 83 total yards and Sam Edwards had a pair of interceptions for the Monarchs.

Valley dominated the first half in every way, piling up 175 yards in offense to just 32 for Harbor.

The Monarchs were particularly impressive in the first period, scoring a pair of touchdowns while limiting Harbor to minus 20 yards in offense.

Valley scored on the opening series, driving 64 yards in nine running plays. LaMonte Simmons scored the touchdown on a 10-yard run, and Bryan Kochner added the kick to put Valley ahead, 7-0.

The Monarchs added another touchdown on the ensuing series when Harbor punter Jose Rocha mishandled a snap, was hit by Sean Campbell, and the ball rolled into the end zone where Kevin Carmichael recovered it for Valley. Simmons, who rushed for 60 yards in eight carries, ran for a two-point conversion and Valley led, 15-0, with 9:59 remaining in the first period.
