From Times wire services

A Pan Am 747 jetliner flying from New York to Madrid with 203 passengers aboard had engine problems, forcing the pilot to cut an engine and make an emergency landing in Gander, Newfoundland, Pan Am said today.

The plane touched down smoothly and no one was injured.

Pan Am Flight 156, which left John F. Kennedy International Airport at 9:52 p.m. Sunday after an hour and 42 minute delay, experienced vibration in one of its four engines off the coast of Canada just before midnight. The pilot cut the engine and turned back, Pan Am officials said.

Also today, a Boeing 727 landed safely in Paris missing one wheel after losing part of its landing gear while taking off from Algiers.
