Fire Damage Set at $1.5 Million

Fire roared through a row of four South Gate businesses Monday, causing an estimated $1.5-million damage before it was brought under control by 17 fire companies, authorities said.

The fire in the business complex in the 12000 block of South Garfield Avenue was reported at 4:46 a.m., Los Angeles County Fire Department dispatcher Lawrence Beals said. Firefighters battled the blaze for more than an hour before it was extinguished at 5:53 a.m., he said.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries, he said.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
