P.M. BRIEFING : Tiant Signs With Senior League

Former Boston Red Sox superstar Luis Tiant has signed up to play with the Gold Coast Suns of the Senior Professional Baseball Assn., the Florida club said Tuesday.

“Because of his proven major league abilities and experience, we feel he will be a major asset to our ballclub,” said Jim Block, general manager of the Suns.

“I’m very happy to have signed with the Suns,” Tiant said. “I am looking forward to getting back into baseball.”

Training camp opens Monday for the Suns. The team is based in Pompano Beach and will play some home games in Miami at Miami Stadium.

The league’s season runs through November, December and January.

The Cuban-born Tiant, 49, amassed 229 wins and 172 losses during a 19-year career in the major leagues; he pitched in more than 570 games and 3,400 innings. He had four 20-win seasons: 1968, 1973, 1974 and 1976.
