PREP ROUNDUP : Corona del Mar’s Magnificent 7 Score Cross-Country Sweep of Estancia

Corona del Mar had the top seven finishers, all with the time of 16:46, to defeat Estancia, 15-50, in a Sea View League cross-country match.

The seven who crossed the finish line at the same time were Marshall Solomon, Tim Sullivan, Darren Sutherland, John Murphy, Chris Cannon, Mike Marumoto and Keith Murai.

In other Sea View League boys’ cross-country:

Saddleback defeated University, 15-44, at Mason Park. Saddleback’s Eddie Salinas finished first in 15:04, followed by teammates Robbie Price (15:09) in second and Joe Heredia (15:54) in third.

In South Coast League boys’ cross-country:

San Clemente, sparked by Mike Farrell’s first-place finish, defeated El Toro, 19-38, at San Clemente. Farrell finished the three-mile course in 15 minutes 18 seconds for San Clemente, the county’s second-ranked team. Teammates Alex Obradovic (15:57) and Chris Youngerman (16:05) were second and third, respectively.

In Empire League boys’ cross-country:

El Dorado had the top two finishers and swept a double dual meet, defeating Katella, 25-32, and Cypress, 15-50. Katella defeated Cypress, 15-50. El Dorado’s Shawn Cummons won the race in 16 minutes, with teammate David Schmitt second in 16:20. Katella’s Mike Lover was third in 16:29.

In Sunset League boys’ cross-country:

Fountain Valley defeated Ocean View, 15-46. The Barons’ Rich Lockwood won the race with a time of 16:06 at Central Park.

In Century League girls’ cross-country:

Debbie Henderson won with a time of 19:56 to lead Canyon to a 24-30 victory over host Santa Ana.

In Empire League girls’ cross-country:

Katella’s Martha Pinto broke the girls’ record on the three-mile Cypress course, but the host Centurions had enough depth to sweep a double dual meet, defeating Katella, 21-34, and El Dorado, 15-50. Katella defeated El Dorado, 15-50. Pinto’s 19:03 bettered the previous course record by 44 seconds, but Cypress had the next four finishers in Joanne Cox (21:26), Christine Lewis (21:34), Shelia Filsinger (21:38) and Pam Lee (21:41).

In Sea View League girls’ cross-country:

Corona del Mar had the top six finishers and defeated Estancia, 15-46. Sophomore Kirsten McFarland won the race in (20:53), followed by teammates Johanna Wallin and Kirsten Shryock, each in 20:54. The top finisher for Estancia was Heather Ryan in seventh at 21:37.

In South Coast League girls’ cross-country:

Terri Smythers won in a San Clemente course-record time of 18:38 as the fifth-ranked Tritons defeated El Toro, 24-32. Smythers beat the two-year old record of San Clemente’s Amy King by two seconds.

In Angelus League girls’ tennis:

Rosary 14, St. Joseph 4--Mandy Gomez swept her sets 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, to lead visiting Rosary (11-2, 3-1)

In Century League girls’ tennis:

Villa Park 15, El Modena 3--Muna Abdi swept her singles, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3, to lead Villa Park (7-3, 3-1) at Ridgeline Country Club.

In Empire League girls’ tennis:

Katella 11, Esperanza 7--Lynn Vonusa swept her sets, 6-4, 6-4, 6-0, to lead Katella at Esperanza.

In Garden Grove League girls’ tennis:

La Quinta 13, Pacifica 5--Ann Pham swept her matches, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, as did Nichole McLean, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0 to lead visiting La Quinta (10-3, 9-0). Both girls are 26-1 in league matches this season.

In Pacific Coast League girls’ tennis:

Laguna Hills 18, Orange 0--Jenny Marquis and Brook Fleming each posted 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 sweeps to lead visiting Laguna Hills (6-5, 5-0).

In South Coast League girls’ tennis:

Mission Viejo 16, Irvine 2--Dori Lee swept, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, for the Diablos (8-3, 1-3) at Mission Viejo.

In Sunset League girls’ tennis:

Huntington Beach 17, Westminster 1--Hang Phi swept, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, for host Huntington Beach (2-3 in league play).

Fountain Valley 11, Marina 7--Rene Urricariet swept her sets, 6-4, 6-0, 6-0, to lead visiting Fountain Valley.

In Angelus League girls’ volleyball:

St. Joseph 3, Rosary 0--The host Jesters held on to win, 15-5, 19-17, 16-14. Wendy Herb of Rosary had 10 kills and seven blocks and teammate Julie Lugaro 12 kills and six blocks in the losing effort.

In Orange League girls’ volleyball:

Magnolia 3, Brea-Olinda 0--Jill Schneider had 12 kills, six digs and 3 blocks to lead host Magnolia to a 15-9, 15-6, 15-12, victory. Esther Arbiso had five aces and seven kills for Magnolia (6-4, 3-1).

In South Coast League water polo:

Capistrano Valley 14, Mission Viejo 5--Unbeaten Capistrano Valley scored 10 goals in a row in the second half to break away from a 4-4 halftime tie. Paul Felton scored five goals and Kevin Eggert four to lead the Cougars (16-0, 2-0).
