A woman was fatally shot Friday by her husband in an accident that occurred as he was cleaning his gun, police said.

Norma A. Nunez, 22, was pronounced dead at United Western Medical Center-Santa Ana at 11:30 a.m., a little more than an hour after she was shot in her apartment in the 1900 block of North Spurgeon Street, according to Santa Ana police.

Her husband, Arnol Rene Nunez, also 22, was cleaning his .38-caliber revolver in the kitchen, where Norma Nunez was working, police said.

Arnol Nunez later told officers that he thought the gun was unloaded, and described pulling the trigger once and hearing the gun click on an empty chamber, police said. When he pulled the trigger a second time, the gun fired and the bullet pierced Norma Nunez’ left arm and penetrated her chest.

The shooting was being treated as an accident and Arnol Nunez was not held pending further investigation. Police said he kept the gun in his home for personal protection.
