SOUTHERN SECTION ROUNDUP - Cruz’s Return Sparks Thousand Oaks, 21-0

Ronnie Cruz returned the opening kickoff of the second half 73 yards for a touchdown to break open a scoreless Marmonte League game Friday night and lead Thousand Oaks to a 21-0 victory over host Camarillo.

The shutout was the third of the season for the Lancers (5-0-1, 3-0 in league play).

Sophomore Dave Acosta recovered a muffed punt at the Camarillo 35-yard line to set up another Lancer score in the third quarter. Thousand Oaks quarterback Scott Peterson, who completed only one of nine passes, tossed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Jim Magallanes on a fourth-and-10 play.

Reserve fullback Brian Sturges gained 56 of the 59 yards on a seven-play Thousand Oaks drive and scored on a four-yard run midway through the fourth quarter for the last touchdown.

In a defensive battle, Thousand Oaks had 133 yards in offense and Camarillo (2-4, 1-2) gained 75 total yards. Camarillo linebacker Scott Foster registered four solo sacks for minus-25 yards to lead the Scorpion defense.

Thousand Oaks fullback Chris Foster (24 yards in three carries) left the game after less than three minutes with an injury to his left knee and did not return.

Camarillo running back Tim Cornish led the Scorpions in rushing with 28 yards in eight carries.
