Museum Exhibit Focuses on Case Study Home Era

A multimedia exhibit, “Blueprints for Modern Living: History and Legacy of the Case Study Houses (1945-1966),” will be sponsored by the Museum of Contemporary Art at the Temporary Contemporary, 152 N. Central Ave., Oct. 17-Feb. 18. It will feature:

--A film series, 10 short films, including the world premiere of a film by Eames Demetrios, grandson of Charles Eames, “901: After 45 Years of Working,” filmed at the Eames’ former studio at 901 Venice Ave. in Venice.

--Full-scale reproductions of the Pierre Koenig house No. 22 and the Ralph Rapson house No. 4 (previously unbuilt).

--Models of 16 of the Case Study houses.

--Facade of the Ray and Charles Eames house, Case Study House No. 8, Pacific Palisades.

--A time line, 1945-66, describing the history of the period.

--Black-and-white and color photographs of the exteriors and interiors of the houses, most of them by Julius Shulman and Marvin Rand, from the period.

--Original blueprints and drawings.

--Art objects, paintings and sculptures, commissioned for the houses.

--Design objects of the period, 1945-66, including textiles, ceramics and industrial design objects, such as toasters, vacuum cleaners.

--Videotape produced by Peter Kirby, interviews with many of the architects, original house owners, designers, architectural historians. Continual screenings. (20 minutes.)

Curator: MOCA associate curator Elizabeth Smith.

Hours: 11 a.m.- 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Closed Monday.

Admission: $4; Free on Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m.

Two events are also planned in conjunction with the exhibit:

Symposium: 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday: “Blueprints for Modern Living: History and Legacy of the Case Study Houses (1945-1966), Historical Context, Post-War Los Angeles, Dialogue with Case Study Architects,” Japan America Theater, 244 S. San Pedro St. Los Angeles. Tickets: $10-$25.

Reception: Case Study architects, designers and symposium participants. 6 to 10 p.m., MOCA Temporary Contemporary, 152 N. Central Ave., Los Angeles. Tickets: $20-$35.
