SOUTHLAND ROUNDUP : Northridge Win Streak Ends, 33-17

Cal State Northridge’s four-game winning streak ended Saturday night with a 33-17 loss to Portland State in a Western Football Conference game at Portland.

Portland State won its 15th consecutive conference game and took a big step toward its third conference championship in a row.

Portland is 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference. Northridge is 4-3 and 1-1.

Burnell Harvin, filling in for Portland at tailback for injured Curtis Delgardo, the conference’s top offensive player last season, rushed for 172 yards and two touchdowns in 31 carries.

It was his fourth consecutive game over 100 yards after taking over as the Vikings’ starter when Delgardo broke his ankle.

Occidental 23, San Diego 17--Freshman Gary Little ran for 263 yards in 31 carries and scored two touchdowns, including the winning score from four yards in the fourth quarter, as the Tigers upset the previously unbeaten Toreros at Occidental.

The Tigers (4-1) scored nine points in the fourth quarter--Little’s touchdown and linebacker Kelly Bynum’s sack of Brendan Murphy for a safety with 1:34 remaining--to rally from a 17-14 deficit. San Diego is 5-1.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 19, Kearney (Neb.) State 13--Cal Poly quarterback Keith Jarrett completed 23 of 34 passes for 390 yards, setting a school record for passing yardage to lead the Mustangs at San Luis Obispo.

Mustang receiver Claude Joseph caught five passes for 115 yards, for his second consecutive 100-yard plus game. Senior fullback Cornell Williams rushed for 61 yards and scored a touchdown in 11 carries. Freshman Tom McCook kicked four field goals to tie his school record. The Mustangs are 3-3; Kearney State fell to 2-4.

UC Santa Barbara 27, St. Mary’s 21--Quarterback Steve Armstrong passed for 296 yards and a touchdown, and the Gauchos held off a late rally in a nonconference game at Moraga.

Santa Barbara built a 24-7 halftime lead on the strength of Armstrong’s arm and a blocked punt by Fred Freking that was recovered by Mark Henigan 10 seconds before halftime.

St. Mary’s came back in the second half to close to within 24-21 behind quarterback Tim Rosenkranz, who passed for 259 yards, completing 26 of his school-record 47 attempts.

Freshman Daryl Rogers scored on a five-yard run with 11:45 remaining in the game to cut the margin to three.

Santa Barbara won its third consecutive game and improved its record to 4-2. St. Mary’s dropped to 4-3.

The Gauchos gained 408 yards of total offense while St. Mary’s had 403 yards.

Rogers led all ballcarriers with 110 yards in 26 carries.

Split end Brian Fleming caught 10 passes for 137 yards for UCSB, including a 19-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter.

Cal Lutheran 26, Hayward St. 14--Dan Nagelmann threw for 239 yards and two touchdowns to spark the Kingsmen at Thousand Oaks.

Nagelmann was 15 of 22, including a 66-yard scoring pass to Tom Leogrande to put Cal Lutheran ahead, 10-0, with 7:11 to play in the half.

Claremont-Mudd 45, Pomoma-Pitzer 0--Quarterback Mike Pembroke and running back Schon Branum each scored two touchdowns to lead the Stags to a win in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Claremont.

Pembroke, who rushed for 73 yards in 16 carries, scored on runs of 25 and 28 yards. Branum scored on runs of two and seven yards.

Redlands 46, Whittier 14--Curt Landreth ran for 203 yards in 20 carries and scored four touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs to victory in an SCIAC game at Redlands.
