SOUTHLAND ROUNDUP : Gauchos Hold Off St. Mary’s

Quarterback Steve Armstrong passed for 296 yards and a touchdown and UC Santa Barbara held off a late rally to post a 27-21 nonconference win over St. Mary’s at Moraga Saturday.

The Gauchos built a 24-7 halftime lead on the strength of Armstrong’s arm and a blocked punt by Fred Freking that was recovered by Mark Henigan just 10 seconds before halftime.

St. Mary’s came back in the second half to close to within 24-21 behind quarterback Tim Rosenkranz, who passed for 259 yards, completing 26 of his school-record 47 attempts.

Freshman Daryl Rogers scored on a five-yard run with 11:45 remaining in the game to cut the margin to three.

UC Santa Barbara won its third consecutive game and improved its record to 4-2. St. Mary’s dropped to 4-3.

The Gauchos gained 408 yards of total offense while St. Mary’s had 403 yards.

Rogers led all ball carriers with 110 yards on 26 carries.

Split end Brian Fleming caught 10 passes for 137 yards for UCSB, including a 19-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter.

Claremont-Mudd 45, Pomona-Pitzer 0--Quarterback Mike Pembroke and Schon Branum each scored two touchdowns to lead the Stags to a win in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Claremont.

Pembroke, who rushed for 73 yards in 16 carries, scored on runs of 25 and 28 yards. He also completed nine of 18 passes for 161 yards.

Branum scored on runs of two and seven yards. Reed Pangborn ran for 123 yards in 26 carries for Claremont-Mudd (2-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference).

Chris Smith led Pomona-Pitzer, 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference, with 124 yards in 24 carries.

Claremont-Mudd had 443 yards total offense and held Pomona Pitzer to 247 yards.
