CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : SAN FRANCISCO : 5 Gambling Ring Suspects Arrested
- Share via
Five people were arrested in weekend raids on two San Francisco apartments that police said were the headquarters of a gambling ring that stretched as far south as San Diego. Another suspect was arrested in nearby Daly City. “It was easily the biggest bookmaking operation in San Francisco ever,” Inspector Vince Repetto said. San Francisco police launched the probe of the ring in May after a man searching through a dumpster for aluminum cans in Golden Gate Park discovered a bag containing strange slips of paper and audio cassettes. The bag’s contents proved to be evidence of a multimillion-dollar-a-day operation. Seized during the weekend arrests were large bags of wager slips on sporting events ranging from the World Series to college and professional football and horse races, authorities said.
