* Braille Institute is the recipient of a $1 million grant from the Weingart Foundation with funds being disbursed in three installments. The grant will be used for the $15-million expansion of the institute’s Los Angeles facilities, which will include a three-story, 100,000-square-foot Library and Conference Center, now under construction with a 1990 dedication date. The expansion will allow consolidation of more than 550,000 Braille and recorded-format books and other reading materials at one location now serving more than 23,000 library patrons.

* The Venice Family Clinic held its “Sweet Chair-ity” dinner and art auction, Sept. 23, at the Holmby Hills estate of Diane and Stephen Reissman. The clinic has served the Westside’s needy since 1970. The event, attended by 200 guests, raised over $75,000 for the clinic’s new building fund. Marlene and Dr. Edward Riceberg and Fran and Ron Cey were chairpersons.

* The Los Angeles Commission on Assaults Against Women held its Sixth Annual Comedy Night Benefit Sept. 24 at the Comedy Store. Net proceeds of $17,000 will be used for LACAAW’s 24-hour rape and battering hot lines, sexual assault and domestic violence programs for women and children, services to the deaf and various other projects. Comedians Taylor Negron, Jo Ann Dearing and celebrity presenters Ernie Hudson, Heather Fairfield and Paul Scherrer helped to make the evening a success.

* The Glendale Memorial Health Foundation held its second annual fund-raising event, “An Evening of Wine and Roses II” on Sept. 24 at Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center’s lobby plaza. Net proceeds of $90,755 will be used toward cardiac diagnostic equipment for the hospital’s soon-to-be-built heart center. Joanne and Dr. Santo S. Polito were honorary chairpersons.

* The Women’s Group of Friends of Tel Hashomer, which raises funds for Chaim Sheba Medical Center’s department of pediatric medicine in Israel, launched its 1989/’90 calendar of events with high tea for founding members ($500 minimum pledgers) Sept. 26, at the Regency Club, with author Judith Balaban Quine and TV personality Connie Martinson attending. Deanie Levine and Arline Susswein were co-chairs whose efforts increased membership, raising the projected fund-raising goal to $200,000.

* Les Marraines Auxiliary of the Children’s Home Society of California, at its “Give Your Heart to a Child” luncheon and fashion show benefit Sept. 28, at Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel, netted $14,000. The Auxiliary has, over the years, raised more than $160,000 for the society. Inge Jones is auxiliary president. Ruth Ensslin and Phyllis McCray were co-chairs.

* Goodwill Guild’s annual “Yachts of Fun” benefit Oct. 1 at the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club netted $32,500 for Goodwill Industries of Southern Los Angeles County. The event was in honor of the late Marilyn Brock. Proceeds will be used for a computer and clerical training class for deaf clients. Guild president Penny Thorup and Kathy Schuck were co-chairs.
