Top-Seeded Edberg Moves to Semifinals in Tokyo Matches
Top-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden beat Frenchman Henri Leconte 6-1, 7-6 (9-7) today and led the way into the semifinals of the Seiko Super tennis tournament.
In other quarterfinal matches, third-seeded Aaron Krickstein of the United States beat Grant Connell of Canada 6-3, 6-4; fifth-seeded Carl-Uwe Steeb of West Germany defeated American Rick Leach 6-4, 7-5, and Darren Cahill of Australia outlasted Ronald Agenor of Haiti 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4.
Edberg, ranked third in the world, will play Krickstein, and Steeb meets Cahill in the semifinals Saturday.
“In the first set, my serves were too strong,” Leconte said. “He returned well. I was getting better and better in the second set, but I was disappointed as a 7-6 set point slipped away in the tie-break.”
“Leconte is always a tough opponent,” Edberg said. “He hit the ball hard, and it was difficult to get rhythm. I concentrated on each point, and that was the main factor for the victory.”
Krickstein, ranked 10th in the world, found Connell an erratic opponent. Connell had 39 unforced errors against Krickstein’s 23.
