NEW YORK — Major league baseball will contribute $1.4 million in aid to earthquake victims of Northern California, the commissioner’s office said today in San Francisco.
Commissioner Fay Vincent said the gift comes from all 26 clubs, with the Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants contributing slightly larger shares.
“All of us in baseball are proud to help the recovery effort of the people of this wonderful area,” Vincent said.
“We want to assist the recovery to demonstrate our appreciation for the cooperation we have received while guests here and to emphasize our support for the people who have suffered,” Vincent said.
The funds will go through a newly formed Northern California Earthquake Relief Fund.
