SPORTSCOPE : 3 Indy Drivers Go in Ascot National Midget/Sprint Races

Three Indy 500 auto racers will be part of the field at Ascot Raceway tonight and Saturday in the Pacific Coast Nationals midget/sprint car races. The event, which begins each night at 8, features Indy racers Rich Vogler, Billy Vukovich and Stan Fox, as well as all the Western States and CRA tour regulars for non-winged cars. The 50-car field will be pared to a 20-car final of 20 laps Friday and 30 laps Saturday. Also on tap Saturday is the continuing CRA sprint car series, which features a 50-lap main event.
Southern California Slo-Two-Pitch Softball is accepting applications for its men’s fall/winter season. The cost per team is $160 and each is guaranteed three games. Divisions of C, D and Masters (30 years and older) are being formed. Games will be played in Orange and Los Angeles counties. For more information call 866-8685.
The Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s soccer team faces a crucial game at Cal State Northridge on Sunday while Loyola Marymount is at USC on Saturday and at UC San Diego on Sunday. The women’s soccer team at Dominguez Hills, second-ranked in the nation, closes its season at San Diego State on Saturday. Dominguez Hills will find out next week if it gets one of four berths in the Division II playoffs. In water polo, Loyola will be in the UC Riverside Tournament on Saturday.
Mike Chamberlin, a South Bay native, will be the host of a television show Sunday on cable station Prime Ticket that features highlights from the recent Professional Surfing Assn. of America Championships. Peter Townend, the 1976 world champion, will join Chamberlin, a veteran surf reporter and the sports anchor at KTVK in Phoenix. Previously, Chamberlin worked for KCOP-TV, Channel 13, in Los Angeles.
The Ice Castle International Training Center of Lake Arrowhead will have a ribbon cutting ceremony Saturday to celebrate the opening of a new ice skating training facility on its site above the mountain community of Blue Jay. The rink was constructed by former South Bay businessman Walter Probst and his wife, Carol, a former professional skater.
The 185-yard par three fifth hole at Penmar Golf Course in Mar Vista was no problem for 74-year-old Richard Shappell of Inglewood recently. With a five-wood Shappell recorded the sixth hole in one of his career at the Los Angeles County course, according to starter Skip Belden. Two other area golfers aced their names into link record books. Mike Moreno of Carson holed out at Harbor Park’s par three fourth hole by dropping a nine iron onto the green and rolling the ball into the cup. And the 128-yard second hole at Los Feliz was no match for Harry Kido of Gardena, who dropped a seven iron dive into the cup.
The annual Halloween Open Wrestling Tournament opens with weigh-ins Saturday morning at 6 at El Camino College. Competition is divided into age categories ranging from 7 to 14 years.
