Readers Touch All Bases on Touchy Issue
Like many people, I watched as ABC’s World Series coverage turned into earthquake coverage, still somehow having the mind-set of the modern-day American sports fan. As the pictures grew increasingly grim, I still was thinking almost exclusively of how the World Series would be affected.
And then I read Mike Downey’s column.
It slapped me in the face, grabbed me by the collar and shook me up for good measure.
Downey is right. Shame on me. Shame on all of us who have forgotten that there’s a real world out there. If it truly ever gets to the point where the interest in a sporting event exceeds compassion for humans, we will truly be lost as a society.
