Share

Valencia High scored four touchdowns in the second quarter and went on to a 49-0 rout of Magnolia High in front of 3,100 at Bradford Stadium.

The game quickly got away from Magnolia, which has not won a game in eight tries this season. Valencia is 7-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 in Orange League play.

The Tigers scored on the first play of the second quarter on a two-yard run by senior running back Sergio Ortiz, then proceeded with the scoring. The second-quarter onslaught was led by two interceptions of Sentinel quarterback Elliot Parker and a recovery of a Parker fumble by Valencia’s Chad Irwin.

Valencia took a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter on a nine-yard pass play from senior quarterback Richard Wells to senior tight end Scott Weinman.

Valencia Coach Mike Marrujo was impressed by the consistency his team displayed in running over the Sentinels, especially after the Tigers’ lackluster 14-14 tie with Savanna last week.

“We didn’t talk about them (Magnolia) all week. We talked about ourselves . . . our approach,” Marrujo said. “It was crucial (to win) because we had to prove to ourselves we are a good football team, but last week was not indicative of the kind of football team we are.”

Valencia rolled up 298 yards rushing, and Wells threw for 93 yards, completing four of seven passes, including two for touchdowns.

Leading, 35-0, with 4:54 remaining in the first half, Valencia had outgained Magnolia 209 yards to 19. All of Magnolia’s yards at that point had come on the ground. The Sentinels finished the game with only 112 total yards.
