COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Dominguez Hills Women End Best Soccer Season

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s soccer team closed out its most successful season here Saturday with a 3-0 victory over San Diego State.

The Lady Toros, ranked No. 2 in Division II, got first-half goals from Kristi White and Jenny Grasso and a second-half goal from White to improve to 18-2.

Goalie Chris Pezzullo, who only had to record one save, was credited with her 15th shutout, giving her a school career record. Freshman forward Heather Rolland had assists on all three goals. White, a senior, has 17 goals and 16 assists this season.

San Diego State is 3-4.

The Lady Toros now await an invitation to the NCAA Division II tournament. The four teams will be announced early this week. Domiguez Hills has applied to be the host site.

Loyola Marymount’s men placed third while the women finished last in the West Coast Conference cross-country meet at Belmont, Calif. Portland won both team titles. Portland’s Matt Sabo was the men’s individual winner, running the 10-kilometer course in 33:02. Three Loyola freshmen had a strong pack finish, with Eric Merk placing 18th in 36:41, followed by Mike Thom 19th (36:43) and Kevin Delaney 20th (36:52).

Marlene Schneider was the top Loyola finisher in the women’s 5-K, placing 27th. Pepperdine’s Kim McElhinney was the individual winner.
