Tailback Sheldon Canley ran for 208 yards and two touchdowns as San Jose State overcame a slow start and beat winless New Mexico State, 34-6, Saturday to keep its Big West title hopes alive.

The Spartans (4-3 and 3-0) will play Fresno State next week in a game that likely will decide the Big West champion.

The Aggies (0-8 and 0-4) have not won a conference game since 1986 and own the longest losing streak in Division I-A--14 games.

After falling behind 3-0 on a 28-yard field goal by San Jose State’s Jim Kirk, the Aggies took a 6-3 lead on field goals of 22 and 50 yards by Dat Ly.

The Spartans regained control and led 8-6 at halftime on a 44-yard field goal by Kirk and a safety when George Muraoka blocked a Garret Henson punt out of the end zone.
