NEWPORT BEACH : Voters Will Decide Fate of Vacant Lot

Share

City voters will decide on Nov. 7 whether a small parcel of land at 4210 River Ave. should be sold at market price or whether the city should hold on to the land.

The property has been vacant since the city acquired it in 1936. Residents who live near it have maintained the lot for more than 25 years at no cost to the city.

Some residents argue that the parcel has benefited neither the city nor the neighborhood, other than providing some open space. It is zoned residential, has been appraised at $350,000, and has been declared unsuitable for park purposes.

Councilwoman Evelyn R. Hart, who favors the sale, said the money could go into the library or park funds.

But Mayor Donald A. Strauss argued, “It’s a nice little lot, some trees, that has been maintained by the residents.”
