WORLD : Pet Tiger Killed on Rampage
From Times Wire Services
TOKYO — Japan’s only legal pet tiger was shot and killed after escaping from its back-yard cage and mauling two dogs to death today, police said.
A hunter killed the 3-year-old male tiger owned by a business executive in the small town of Konan near Tokyo. The 6-foot animal escaped when a keeper left the door of its cage unlocked.
An official said about 13,000 dangerous animals are registered as pets or for commercial and scientific purposes, but this was the only tiger registered as a pet.
