From Times staff and wire service reports

A family escaped unharmed from their home in Santa Clarita this morning as flames swept through it, the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported.

The fire in the home in the 24600 block of Arcadia Street was reported at 1:20 a.m., dispatcher Stan Pearson said. Four members of a family living in the home were awakened and escaped.

Marlene Morris said she was awakened by an explosion, possibly from an oxygen bottle that was stored in the garage. She woke her husband, Don, and two teen-age sons, including one whose leg was in a cast, and fled from the smoke-filled home. She said she burned her feet running across hot embers that had fallen in the house.

The fire caused an estimated $120,000 damage and took firefighters about 15 minutes to extinguish. Cause of the blaze is under investigation, Pearson said.
