Newspaper Says Piniella to Manage Cincinnati

Lou Piniella, an adviser with the New York Yankees, has accepted the managerial position with the Cincinnati Reds, according to the Dayton Daily News in today’s editions.
The newspaper quoted unnamed sources as saying Piniella, 46, has agreed to a two-year, $350,000-a-year contract, $50,000 less than he would have earned had he stayed with the Yankees where he twice served as manager. He also was the team’s general manager.
Piniella would replace Pete Rose, who was forced to leave the team in midseason when he was suspended from baseball by former Commissioner Bart Giamatti.
