ON THE SIDELINES : U.S. Team Routs Aussie-Kiwi Golfers on 2nd Day of Four Tours

An American team, led by Mark Calcavecchia, routed a squad from Australia and New Zealand 10-2 on the second day of the Four Tours World Championship of Golf. The Europeans overpowered Japan 9-3 today in the round-robin competition over the 7,071-yard Tokyo Yomiuri Country Club course.

In the first round Thursday, the U.S. and the European teams tied 6-6, while the Australia-New Zealand team beat Japan 8-4.

After the first two rounds, the United States led with 16 points, one ahead of Europe. Australia-New Zealand followed with 10 points and Japan had 7.

And in women’s golf in Otsu, American Cindy Rarick and Laura Davies of Britain shot shot 5-under-par 67s today and tied for the lead in the first round of the Mazda Japan Classic.

Rarick had seven birdies and two bogeys as the season’s last official event on the LPGA tour got under way. Deborah McHaffie shot a 68 and was alone in third place in the field of 83, which includes 46 players from the American tour.
