A 19-year-old man who was among the seven inmates to escape from the County Jail in El Cajon this week after knocking a hole through a plaster wall surrendered Wednesday to authorities at County Jail downtown, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Department said.

Charles James Anderson, who was serving time for drug possession, walked into the central jail at 10:55 p.m., Sheriff’s Deputy Lorraine Truitt said.

Anderson called a local television station before surrendering, Truitt said. Anderson told sheriff’s officials he wanted the public to know he escaped from the El Cajon facility to draw attention to the dangers of drugs, Truitt said.

Anderson is the third inmate from the Sunday escape to be returned to custody. Salvatore Serna, 37, and Keith J. Inman, 20, were apprehended at different locations the day after they escaped from the El Cajon jail by descending a makeshift rope made of sheets.

The other four inmates remain at large, Truitt said.
