Plane Lands on Overpass; Two Injured

Share

A light plane experiencing engine trouble made an emergency landing Sunday afternoon on an Golden State Freeway overpass in Sun Valley about one mile short of a Burbank Airport runway.

Both a man piloting the plane and his woman passenger were taken to Pacifica Hospital in Sun Valley, where a spokesperson said they were in stable condition.

There was no explosion or fire, Los Angeles firefighters said.

The plane, a Cessna, clipped a light pole on the overpass, tore off its wheels and then bumped into the front of a late-model Cadillac carrying a woman driver and three children, a witness said. No one in the car was seriously injured.

A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said the pilot, 61, was attempting to land from the north when he radioed the Burbank Airport control tower that he had engine trouble.

“I’ve lost an engine, I have to land immediately,” the pilot reportedly told the tower.
