Former Head of Beech-Nut Admits Guilt: Niels L. Hoyvald, the former president of the Beech-Nut Nutrition Corp., admitted that he knowingly sold sugar water to consumers who believed that they were buying pure apple juice for their babies. Hoyvald, 56, of New Lebanon, N.J., pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn to 10 felony counts of violating the federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. Under terms of a plea agreement, U.S. District Judge Thomas C. Platt fined Hoyvald $100,000 and sentenced him to five years probation and six months of full-time community service.
