LOCAL : Orange County Officials Target Riverside Desert as Site for Jail

The Orange County Board of Supervisors agreed today to launch a feasibility study into building a regional jail in a remote desert location in Riverside County.
The vote came a week after Supervisor Don R. Roth introduced a proposal to create a regional jail authority to oversee the construction and operation of a prison facility by Riverside and Orange counties and possibly San Diego and San Bernardino counties.
According to Roth’s staff, the proposed jail site is eight miles south of the small town of Eagle Mountain.
If the regional jail proposal became a reality, another site for a jail within Roth’s district near Anaheim Hills would not be needed.
Supervisors Thomas F. Riley and Roger Stanton supported the study of a regional jail but pointed out that they had voted to support a jail in Gypsum Canyon east of Anaheim Hills.
