A 24-year-old man was found guilty Thursday of vehicular manslaughter and drunk driving in the death of Rancho Penasquitos Town Councilman Charles Goeb.

After a San Diego Superior Court jury deliberated one day, Patrick Jean Moore of Rancho Penasquitos was convicted of all charges in his weeklong trial.

Goeb, 43, was on crutches when he was struck by Moore’s car about 10:30 p.m. Aug. 9 at Carmel Mountain Road and Stoney Creek Road in Rancho Penasquitos.

Goeb, who had cerebral palsy and had only recently been able to use crutches instead of a wheelchair, was killed instantly after just leaving a meeting of the Rancho Penasquitos Town Council.

Fellow council members said they had offered to drive him home, but he preferred to walk for exercise.

Moore’s blood-alcohol level, tested two hours after the collision, was .22, or more than twice the legal limit for driving under the influence.

Judge Charles Hayes set sentencing for Dec. 14.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Jim Waters said Moore, who remains in custody, could be sentenced to a maximum of five years in state prison and a fine.

Moore’s girlfriend, Ilona Habets, suffered a neck injury in the accident when her head struck the windshield.
