Langston and Agent Meet With Padre Officials

Free-agent pitcher Mark Langston and his agent met for the first time with Padre President Dick Freeman and Manager Jack McKeon in Los Angeles Friday morning, and both sides were happy with the way things went.

Of course, that may be because money wasn’t discussed.

“It went very well; it was a great meeting,” said Arn Tellem, Langston’s agent. “We didn’t talk money or terms, but it was a great meeting. Dick Freeman and Jack McKeon are two really nice individuals. Mark likes the Padres, and he knows a lot of their players.”

The foursome discussed aspects of the San Diego team and the community.

“We did our share today,” McKeon said. “Now, it’s up to the money. I would think we’d be in great position if the finances could be worked out.”

Tellem said he expects to begin negotiating with the Padres sometime next week. He said he and Langston, who was born in San Diego, will likely meet with 10 or 11 teams.

As for another Padre free agent concern--Cy Young award winner Mark Davis--Freeman said there were no new developments in the negotiations.
