McEnroe vs. Connors in Exhibition Tonight

Share

John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors will face each other tonight in an exhibition tennis match at the San Diego Sports Arena, sponsored by PacTel Cellular

The exhibition is being staged as a benefit for the San Diego State University Aztec Athletic Foundation. Connors-McEnroe, a best-of-three sets match, will be preceded by a 7:30 p.m. celebrity doubles match featuring former San Diego Charger Rolf Benirschke and Robin White--a tennis professional who recently was the female half of the U.S. Open Mixed Doubles championship team. They will play Tole Marinkovic and Dorey Brandt, the top male and female tennis players at SDSU.

Connors defeated McEnroe last month in the finals of a Grand Prix event in Toulouse, France, 6-3, 6-3. That has been the only tournament championship this year for Connors, 37. Before playing another exhibition in Los Angeles Monday night, McEnroe, 30, and Connors had faced each other 32 times, with McEnroe holding a 19-13 advantage.
