The Feeding of Cats at Corona del Mar

Share

While your story on the cats of Corona del Mar makes for a cute read, it does society in general, and cats in particular, a disservice by encouraging pet owners to think that they can drop off their unwanted animals at the beach and someone else will care for them.

The reality is far different from the life of luxury described in the article. Prey to disease and parasites, totally dependent upon chance feedings, it is very much a case of survival of the fittest who remain to add to the problem by breeding. And it is unlikely that beach-goers share your amusement at the image of the “huge sandbox” provided by the state beach.

Anyone tempted to discard his unwanted cat to the uncertainties of life at the beach should be reminded that it is against the law to abandon any dog or cat (California Penal Code 597s).
