Hot-Shooting UCSD Wins to Finish Third

UC San Diego shot 73% from the floor, connecting on 43 of 59 attempts, and beat Kean College of New Jersey, 126-109, for third place in the Triton Tip-Off men’s basketball tournament.

La Verne beat Occidental in the championship game, 62-56. DeShang Weaver, the tourney MVP, scored 23 points to spark the come-from-behind victory.

Tim Rapp, a junior guard for the Tritons (2-1), led all scorers with 33 points and was named to the all-tournament team. Teammate Rick Batt, a sophomore forward, added 24.

Point Loma Nazarene lost to visiting Sonoma State, 84-74. Mike Flores led Point Loma Nazarene (1-2) with 17 points. Teammates Ron Hubbard and John Greer each scored 14 points. Todd Blakely scored 17 points to lead Sonoma State (2-0). Sonoma State led at halftime, 45-39.

Christian Heritage could not overcome the absence of its leading scorer--Brad Soucie, out with the flu--and fell, 86-78, to Saginaw Valley State (4-0).

Mark Kraatz led Heritage (2-2) in three categories with 23 points, seven rebounds and nine assists.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

SDSU lost its second game in the Coopers & Lybrand Tournament in Chicago, falling to Clemson in the consolation game, 62-45. Aztec guard Julie Evans led all scorers with 19 points, and teammate Crystal Lee also finished in double figures with 10 points.

Julia Doria scored nine points, and Julie Lemery and Pauli Mascari each had eight to lead the University of San Diego to a 57-34 victory over host University of Irvine. USD trailed by two at halftime and outscored UC Irvine, 43-18, the second half.

WATER POLO

The UC San Diego water polo team earned the right to play Long Beach State today in the fifth-place game of the NCAA championships in Indianapolis by edging Arkansas-Little Rock, 10-9. Long Beach advanced after getting by Brown, 8-4.

Jason Vance led UCSD with four goals, and teammate Peter McConville added three.

UCSD (21-13) is now assured of retaining its No. 6 spot in the National rankings.

Cal and UC Irvine will battle for the championship and Pepperdine and Stanford will play in the third-place game.
