Police Officer Revives Toddler Who Fell in Pool
A police officer who sped to the scene in just over a minute Saturday revived an 18-month-old boy who had fallen into a swimming pool and stopped breathing, police said.
Newport Beach Police Officer Bill Graham, 25, was about 1 1/2 miles away when he got the call, and drove with sirens wailing to a home on Fullerton Street, Sgt. Andy Gonis said.
The officer found the baby’s father, James Landis, trying to resuscitate 18-month-old Jeffrey Landis, but the baby’s air passages were blocked and his face and hands were ashen, Gonis said.
Graham managed to open the child’s breathing passages, remove the mucus blocking his nose and mouth and start him breathing again, Gonis said.
The baby apparently tumbled into the pool when his father left him unattended in the back yard for a few moments while fetching some tools, Gonis said.
The child was listed in stable condition at Hoag Hospital on Saturday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.
