NATIONAL ROUNDUP : Louisville Works Hard in Second Half to Beat Irish

LaBradford Smith scored 20 points, and Jerome Harmon came off the bench to add 19 as No. 13 Louisville broke away in the second half and beat No. 19 Notre Dame, 84-73, Saturday in the Big Four tournament at Indianapolis.

The Cardinals (3-1) led 64-61 with less eight minutes to play but put the game out of reach with 12 consecutive points, including five by Smith and four by Harmon.

Harmon, a sophomore, had 11 points in the first half, but the Cardinals had only a one-point lead at intermission.

Notre Dame (1-1), losing for the first time in the three-year-old tournament, held its last lead at 41-40.

Two free throws by Felton Spencer put Louisville ahead for good, 46-44. Harmon started the winning streak with a dunk and finished it with another basket with five minutes to play, putting the Cardinals ahead, 76-61.

The Irish were led by Keith Robinson with 15 points and Monty Williams with 11.

Harmon, academically ineligible as a freshman two years ago and redshirted because of back surgery last season, continued his strong play off the bench for the Cardinals.

Louisville led early, but the Irish stayed close, forced four ties, and took a 22-18 lead on two free throws by Robinson with 5:34 to play.

Harmon, who made five of six shots in the first half, then made three in a row to put Louisville ahead. Three minutes later, Smith made a three-point shot and added a two-pointer in a span of 12 seconds for Louisville’s biggest lead of the half, 33-28.

No. 14 Indiana 71, Kentucky 69--Pat Graham made two three-point shots and Lawrence Funderburke also had six points during a 16-point run as the Hoosiers rallied in the second game of the Big Four tournament.

Kentucky (1-1) came back from an 11-point deficit in the final 10 minutes and had a chance to force an overtime. But Sean Woods missed a jumper as the final buzzer sounded.

Eric Anderson started the streak with a rebound and a layup. Funderburke, who led Indiana with 16 points and 10 rebounds, added another rebound and layup as the Hoosiers trailed, 48-41, with 14:57 to play.

OTHER TOP 25 TEAMS

No. 1 Syracuse 73, No. 16 Temple 56--Billy Owens had 21 points and the Orangemen’s pressure defense held the Owls without a basket during an 11-minute span of the second half in the championship game of the Carrier tournament at Syracuse, N.Y.

It was the 11th time in 13 years that Syracuse (4-0) has won the Carrier tournament. The victory extended the Orangemen’s homecourt winning streak against non-conference teams to 34 games.

Temple, which led through most of the first half, was led by junior guard Mark Macon’s 18 points. The Owls (2-1) also got 14 points from junior center Duane Causwell.

Syracuse led 37-36 at halftime, but Temple regained the lead, 42-41, on Mark Strickland’s 19-foot jump shot with 15:36 to play.

The Owls didn’t score from the field again until Causwell dunked with 4:19 left. Temple, outscored 17-3 during the span, got its only points on free throws by freshman Donald Hodge.

Derrick Coleman added 19 points and was 13 of 14 from the free throw line, where the Orangemen made 11 of 14 in the final three minutes.

No. 3 Georgetown 114, Florida International 67--Freshman reserve Antoine Stoudamire scored 24 points, including 13 in a row to spark a first-half run, and Alonzo Mourning added 17 points as the Hoyas won their 21st consecutive home game at Landover, Md.

Dikembo Mutombo scored 15 points and Ronny Thompson added 11 points for the Hoyas (3-0), who were undefeated at the Capital Centre last season. Cesar Bocachica had 16 points and Dwight Stewart 15 for the Golden Panthers (1-3).

No. 4 Kansas 86, Md. Baltimore County 67--Kevin Pritchard scored 15 points and Terry Brown had 14 for the Jayhawks, who started slowly at Lawrance, Kan.

Kansas trailed by six after Levi Franklin made consecutive three-point shots for the Retrievers (2-2) for an 8-2 lead at 17:52 in the first half.

Kansas made the score 10-10 with a three-pointer by Brown at 14:45. Another three-point basket by Brown two minutes later started a 14-2 run that gave the Jayhawks the lead for good.

Jim Frantz led the Retrievers with 21 points and eight rebounds, and Franklin added 10 points.

No. 5 Missouri 78, Tennessee -Martin 58--Doug Smith was released from a hospital a few hours before the game and wasn’t up to playing at his usual pace, so teammate Nathan Buntin did the job for the Tigers at Columbia, Mo.

Smith was limited to nine points in 12 minutes, down from his average of 18 points and 29 minutes, but Missouri still eased past Division II Tennessee Martin.

Buntin scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds. Anthony Peeler added 15 points and six rebounds for the Tigers.

Smith, who has a viral infection, has lost 11 pounds in the last week, but still tried to play.

“He was in the hospital early this morning. . . . I had to get him out of there (the game),” Missouri Coach Norm Stewart said. “(Smith) was getting really frustrated.”

Missouri (4-0) had two scoring runs in the first half and led the Pacers (3-2) by 20 points through much of the second half.

No. 7 Duke 103, Northwestern 77--Christian Laettner scored 23 points and Robert Brickey and Phil Henderson had 22 each for the Blue Devils at Evanston, Ill.

The Blue Devils (3-0) handed the Wildcats their first loss in three games. It was the third time this season the Blue Devils scored more than 100 points.

Walker Lambiotte led Northwestern with 19 points and Brian Schwabe had 12 before fouling out with six minutes to play.

No. 8 Illinois 82, Chicago State 62--Ervin Small scored 15 points and third-string center Andy Kpedi added nine points and five blocked shots for the Fighting Illini at Champaign, Ill.

The Illini (2-0) were never threatened as they held the Cougars to 14 points in the first half.

Rodney Jones added 14 points for Illinois and Andy Kaufmann had 11. Chicago State (1-3) was led by James Parker with 20 points and Gerald Collins had 17.

Illinois led by 23 points at halftime and Chicago State could get no closer than 15 in the second half.

No. 9 LSU 85, McNeese State 49--Chris Jackson scored 27 points at Baton Rouge, La., in the Tigers’ first game since losing to Kansas in the second round of the preseason NIT.

Stanley Roberts, a 7-foot sophomore, added 18 points and 7-2 freshman Shaquille O’Neal had 13 for LSU (2-1). Junior forward Wayne Sims also had 10 points for the Tigers.

McNeese State, winless in its first three games, was led by freshman reserve Jay Cook’s 18 points, 12 on three-point baskets.

No. 10 Michigan 101, Iowa State 78--Rumeal Robinson scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half as the Wolverines spoiled the homecoming of Cyclone Coach Johnny Orr at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Michigan (3-1) had six players, including all five starters, in double scoring figures.

Justus Thigpen, a redshirt freshman, led Iowa State (2-1) with 14 points.

It was the first time Orr had coached a game in Crisler Arena since he left Michigan to take the Iowa State job before the 1980-81 season.

No. 12 North Carolina 92, Central Florida 42--Hubert Davis scored 14 points at Chapel Hill, N.C., as the Tar Heels ended a two-game losing streak.

North Carolina (3-2) used a 15-5 run in the first 9:30 of the second half to take a 61-25 lead over the Knights. Central Florida dropped to 1-2.

Davis and King Rice both made three-point shots during the Tar Heel’s streak. Rice scored 12 points, while freshmen Kenny Harris and Henrik Rodl each had 11 points.

No. 17 Oklahoma 146, Northeastern Illinois 51--Three nights after setting an NCAA record for points in a half with 97 in a 173-101 victory over U.S. International, the Sooners set an NCAA record for margin of victory against Northeastern Illinois, a Division II school, at Norman, Okla.

William Davis scored 24 points and Skeeter Henry added 22 for the Sooners (2-0).

The Sooners’ 95-point lead was the largest of the game and bettered LSU’s mark in a 124-33 victory over Rhodes in 1952.

No. 20 St. John’s 74, U. San Diego 59--Malik Sealy scored 20 points as the Redmen, who led by 32 at halftime, held on in the opening round of the Lapchick Memorial tournament at New York City.

The Redmen (4-1) play Wright State in today’s championship game. The Raiders (2-0) beat South Alabama, 96-82, in the other first-round game.

No.23 Oklahoma State 81, Ohio State 59--Richard Dumas scored 24 points as the Cowboys outscored the Buckeyes, 24-5, during an 11-minute span in the second half in the consolation game of the Tournament of Champions at Charlotte, N.C.

Ohio State (1-3) trailed, 39-37, at halftime, but then scored eight consecutive points for a 45-39 lead with 18:40 left.

But the Cowboys (2-1) scored 16 of the next 18 points during a span of 6:30 and 24 of 29 points in the next 11 minutes to take a 63-50 lead.

No. 25 North Carolina State 100, No. 18 Pittsburgh 87--Rodney Monroe scored 23 of his 30 points in a second-half surge for the Wolfpack in the championship game of the Tournament of Champions at Charlotte, N.C.

Pittsburgh (2-1) led 49-43 at halftime, but Monroe made sure the lead didn’t last long. His three-pointer with 16:16 remaining gave the Wolfpack (4-1) a 57-55 lead.

OTHER TOURNAMENTS

Iowa 85, UC Santa Barbara 79--Raymond Thompson returned from a one-game suspension to score 22 points and James Moses added 19 for the Hawkeyes in the championship game of the Hawkeye tournament at Iowa City, Iowa.

The Hawkeyes (4-0) held off a late rally by Santa Barbara to win their tournament for the seventh time in eight years. Les Jepsen scored 16 points for Iowa and was voted the tournament’s most valuable player.

Thompson, who had nine points at halftime, was suspended for Iowa’s 75-49 victory over Ohio University on Friday night after pleading guilty to charges of public intoxication, simple assault and interfering with a police officer. The 6-foot-5 sophomore was arrested after becoming unruly when he was denied entrance to a downtown bar.

Gary Gray finished with 14 points for Santa Barbara and Paul Johnson had 13.

Maryland 78, Army 60--Teyon McCoy scored 13 of his 17 points during a first-half run by the Terrapins in the third-place game of the Central Fidelity Holiday tournament.

THE EAST

Boston College 84, Maine 77--Sophomore Bryan Edwards scored 15 points in the final four minutes to lift the Eagles (3-0) at Portland, Me.

Wichita State 101, Colgate 87--John Cooper scored 14 of his 19 points in the first half as the Shockers (1-3) won at New Rochelle, N.Y.

THE MIDWEST

Fresno State 60, Kansas State 58--Todd Peebles came off the bench with 26 seconds remaining and scored his first two points of the game on free throws to give the Bulldogs (3-1) a victory over the Wildcats (2-2) at Manhattan, Kan.

LaSalle 83, DePaul 62--Lionel Simmons scored 26 points and Doug Overton added 20, including four three-point baskets, to lead the Explorers at Rosemont, Ill.

It was the first win for LaSalle (3-0) against the Blue Demons (3-3) in almost 40 years.
