COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Antelope Valley Streaks Past San Diego Mesa
Antelope Valley College switched to a full-court press and an up-tempo offense late in the first half and ran past San Diego Mesa, 101-72, Thursday in the first round of the Golden West tournament.
Antelope Valley held a 30-29 lead when Mesa’s Marvin Prather made a three-point basket with 5:55 left in the first half.
But the Marauders (8-2) outscored Mesa, 17-5, the rest of the half and led, 47-35, at the break.
Antelope Valley then outscored Mesa, 20-4, in the first 6 1/2 minutes of the second half to lead, 67-39.
Demetrius Phillips came off the bench to lead Antelope Valley with 16 points. Paul Ernst and Tony Madison each had 15 points, and Dedan Thomas had 11 points and a team-high 12 assists.
Antelope Valley will play Golden West in a championship semifinal game at 8 tonight.
