NAMES IN THE NEWS : Redford Given Audubon Award
Actor Robert Redford was given the National Audubon Society’s highest award for his efforts to protect the environment.
Redford, in accepting the Audubon Medal on Thursday, called on activists to “work for the election of those who advance the environmental agenda, and the defeat of those who stand in its way.”
“In 1990 and 1992, the goal should be to elect the first environmental President and Congress,” he said.
Redford has campaigned for clean air and energy conservation and fought against strip mining. He also created the Institute for Resource Management to bring together communities to solve environmental problems.
The society presents the medal annually to a person who has demonstrated a lifetime commitment in protecting the environment. Last year’s medal was given to Costa Rican President Oscar Arias and First Lady Margarita Penon de Arias.
