Oregon State, ranked 24th in the nation, made only 43% of its shots and lost to No. 16 Memphis State, 78-72, Friday night at Memphis, Tenn.

The Beavers (3-1) came into the game with 48% shooting.

“We did not shoot very well,” Oregon State Coach Jim Anderson said. “Poor shooting and getting beat on the offensive boards did us in.”

Oregon State also made only nine of 16 free throws.

All five Memphis State starters scored in double figures. Elliot Perry had 16 points, Ernest Smith 15, Ronald McClain 12--plus 12 rebounds--Cheyenne Gibson 11 and Ben Spiva 10.

Memphis State maintained a 15-point lead through much of the middle of the second half. Oregon State whittled it to 73-66 with 1:17 remaining, but Perry made three free throws in the last minute.

No. 7 Illinois 93, Indiana St. 59--Guards Kendall Gill and Steve Bardo each scored 14 points in the first half as the Illini took a 39-25 halftime lead and coasted to victory in the opening game of the Illini tournament at Champaign, Ill.

Wilbert Hooker, Fresno State’s top scorer with 13 points, missed a shot from the top of the key with three seconds left.

The Bulldogs (3-2) of the Big West Conference were coming off consecutive road victories over McNeese State and Kansas State, two teams which played in the NCAA Division I Tournament last spring.
