Harbor-UCLA Medical Center physician Dan M. Cooper, associate professor of pediatrics, has been awarded the Career Investigator Award, by the American Lung Assn. The $35,000 one-year award helps finance Cooper’s research on the transport of carbon dioxide from the cells in which it is made to the lungs and then to the outside environment. A variety of children’s diseases, such as cystic fibrosis and asthma, are associated with impaired elimination of carbon dioxide.

James Ortner of Rancho Palos Verdes has been appointed to the Advisory Council of the South Coast Air Quality Management District. Ortner, transportation planner for the Automobile Club of Southern California, is a faculty member of USC School of Urban and Regional Planning and serves on the Public Policy Committee of Commuter Computer, the ride-sharing organization.

John A. Liles became worshipful master of Inglewood-James Kew Masonic Lodge No. 421, at ceremonies marking the lodge’s 80th installation of officers. Liles and other officers for 1990 were seated by installing officer Rowland C. Harrison, past master. The officers are past masters Thomas C. Letcher, Le Roy Bartels, Eugene B. Show and William D. Richardson. The installation program and reception were held at the Masonic Temple, 520 Main St., El Segundo.

Eleanor Aguilar, a 10-year United Way professional, has been appointed regional vice president of the United Way of Greater Los Angeles’ Harbor/Southeast Region. Aguilar’s previous positions with United Way include assistant and associate campaign director for two Texas United Ways, and work in planning and fund allocations at the United Way of Spokane County in Washington. She began her work with the organization as a campaign assistant in its Ventura County branch. Aguilar earned a master’s degree at San Jose State University and holds a bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University.

Kenneth and Elaine Hunter celebrated their 50th anniversary recently with a dinner party at Del Conte’s restaurant in Torrance. The party was held by their children and spouses: De Ette and Michael Johnston and their children, Wesley Adrian and Kaci Jennifer of Canyon Lake, Calif., Kenneth and Jill Hunter of Vacaville and Barbara and Ray Simard of San Diego. The senior Hunters were married Nov. 25, 1939, in Minneapolis. They have lived in Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, and for the last 43 years in Manhattan Beach.

John R. Beljan, president of Northrop University, played host to a tour of the campus and a luncheon recently for officials from the State Education Council of the People’s Republic of China, that nation’s highest executive education office. The educators visited the Northrop University campus during an 11-day trip to the West Coast to discuss engineering and technical education. The objective of the trip was to study student counseling methods and job placement of college graduates in the United States with the intent of establishing a counseling center in China. The trip was sponsored by the School of Education, University of California and co-sponsored by Hartnell College in Salinas, and March Fong Eu, California secretary of state.
